A search was conducted in scientific databases, identifying 107 publications, of which only 8 were selected after a filtering process for a systematic review on the use of Matricaria chamomilla (MTC) in periodontal diseases. The analyzed studies show that MTC has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, promoting the reduction of gingival bleeding (GBI) and plaque formation (VPI). Mouth rinses containing MTC demonstrated efficacy in reducing the gingival index (GI), although they were less effective than chlorhexidine (CHX). Additionally, MTC-based toothpaste has shown benefits in decreasing plaque index (PI) and gingival bleeding, although its effectiveness is lower compared to fluoride-based toothpaste. It was also observed that MTC can be used in topical cream form to treat Oral Lichen Planus (OLP), relieving symptoms such as burning and lesions. However, its effect is less potent than conventional treatments with triamcinolone. In conclusion, MTC is a natural alternative with positive effects on periodontal health, but its efficacy is lower compared to chemical products like chlorhexidine and fluoride. Therefore, its use is recommended as a complement in periodontal treatments rather than a substitute for traditional approaches.
