The study evaluated the results of implementing a proposal for the humanization of nursing care for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, developed from a phenomenological understanding of their experiences. A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted involving three nurses, three patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and three family members. The proposal consisted of a four-week training program for nursing staff. Information was collected through interviews and researchers’ self-reports and analyzed using an inductive and hermeneutic process aimed at identifying and interpreting the main categories and experiences of the participants. Following the intervention, favorable changes were observed in the care provided by nurses. Patients reported feeling more listened to, understood, and supported, while nurses demonstrated greater attention to their emotions, experiences, and individual needs. Improvements in self-care were also identified in relation to diet, physical activity, treatment adherence, and blood glucose control. Family members perceived more attentive care and greater motivation among patients to take care of their health. The findings indicate that the proposal promoted more humane, empathetic, and personalized nursing care, strengthened relationships among nurses, patients, and family members, and contributed to the self-care of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
