Abstract

In Ecuador, the banana sector plays a key role due to its impact on the economy and social development. The presence of insect pests such as the black weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) and the striped weevil (Metamasius hemipterus) leads to reduced yields in banana plantations. This study aims to evaluate the population dynamics of both species using sandwich-type traps with different attractants to potentially identify the presence of microorganisms associated with the insects captured at a banana plantation in southern Ecuador. Traps using fresh pseudostems were deployed, and monitoring was conducted at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours during three evaluation periods. The collected insects were counted by species and subsequently processed in the laboratory and inoculated onto PDA and Nutrient Agar culture media. As a result, significant differences were observed in the number of weevils depending on species, evaluation period, and trap exposure time, with a higher capture rate of Metamasius hemipterus compared to Cosmopolites sordidus. No statistically significant differences were found among the attractants evaluated. Microbiological isolations revealed Gram-negative bacterial morphotypes associated with the weevils.
