The adoption of international standards in human resource management has become a key factor in strengthening the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in increasingly globalized and demanding contexts; in this sense, the implementation of the ICB-4 Standard of the International Project Management Association is presented as a solid alternative to improve performance evaluation and professionalize human resource management practices in Ecuadorian SMEs. The study was developed using a mixed methodological approach, with a non-experimental design and an exploratory, explanatory, and correlational scope, applying the procedure in a pilot SME located in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and complementing the analysis with semi-structured interviews with five experts certified at IPMA Level D, which allowed the implementation to be contrasted with specialized technical criteria. The results show that the application of the ICB-4 Standard contributes to the formalization of organizational processes, improves the objectivity of performance evaluation, strengthens clarity in roles and responsibilities, and generates a positive perception of fairness and motivation among staff, as well as a favorable relationship between its systematic application and internal organizational performance. Overall, the findings allow us to conclude that the proposed procedure is feasible, replicable, and relevant for Ecuadorian SMEs, contributing to the strengthening of human capital and its alignment with international professional management standards.
